Sharbat- A brief history

Sharbat is basically a syrup made of fruits or flowers that is further diluted as required and served as a drink (non-alcoholic). It is known that the name ‘Sharbat’ comes from the Persian language which in turn is from Arabic. Sharbats are very popular in India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bosnia, Turkey. Sources say that ‘sharbat/sherbet’ basically originated when there were lesser means of preserving and transporting fresh fruits until the 20th century. As refrigeration was not a very feasible option, fruits were thus stored either in the dried form or reduced to a liquid essence in the form of syrup. (Source: Wikipedia)
